Diving Fiji and Jack

Jack
For ten Fiji bucks per head, a very sweet, jovial older Fijian man named Jack will take cruisers to the local dive sites near Viani Bay (the southeast side of the island of Vanua Levu). This is a bargain compared to the hundreds of dollars charged by the local dive shops. So we’ve been out with Jack every day this week and have seen some amazing coral and fish, not to mention a tiger shark (see Bear’s blog entry).

Towing five dinghies behind Oso
About ten boats have gathered in Viani Bay, all wanting to visit the reefs with Jack. For the second time this week, Oso became the mother ship as we loaded up all who wanted to go and went to the dive sites. Today we had twenty people aboard and towed five dinghies. We did a morning dive, had lunch while the dive tanks refilled (thanks to our new compressor we installed in Auckland) and then an afternoon dive.

The diving near here is spectacular! Picture what you see at an IMAX theater. The coral is bright, alive and full of fish. The colors are indescribable and photos do not do them justice. Some of the names of the sites are: the Fish Farm, the Purple Wall, The Zoo, the Cave…appropriately named.
